Juneteenth
June 19th is known in many places as Juneteenth...

Junetenth is often called the African American independence day. On June 19, 1865 two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers arrived in Texas to announce war's end and the freedom of the enslaved.

A range of activities were provided to entertain the masses, many of which continue in tradition today. Rodeos, fishing, barbecuing annd baseball are just a few of the typical Juneteenth activities you may witness today. Juneteenth almost always focused on education and self improvement.Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. I also celebrate Juneteenth where I live. I can remember going to the picnics and eating barbeque as a little kid and watching the parade.
